Ghanche District, Gilgit-Baltistan

Khaplu

The cultural and administrative centre of Ghanche, known for its dramatic mountain setting, Balti culture and heritage architecture.

Khaplu is the main town of Ghanche, the easternmost district of Baltistan, set on a broad slope above the Shyok River. Stone houses, poplars and terraced fields climb the hillside, and the jagged peaks of the Karakoram stand across the river.

It was the seat of the Yabgo rajas, whose palace still overlooks the town, and it keeps some of the oldest wooden mosques in the region. Quieter than Skardu, it suits yatris who like to walk, sit in an orchard and take the mountains slowly.

  • Khaplu KhanqahA large wooden prayer hall with a painted and carved interior.

Good to know

Khaplu is a conservative town. Dress modestly, and ask before photographing people or entering a mosque; visitors may be asked to view some interiors from the doorway. Carry your passport, as there are checkpoints on the road.

Best time to visit: Typically April to October. Apricots ripen in July and August, and autumn colour usually arrives in October.

Getting there: About 100 km east of Skardu, two to three hours by road along the Indus and then the Shyok.

Route: Lahore to Skardu

Seasonal notes are typical patterns, not promises. High passes and plains open and close with the snow, and some areas need permits. We confirm current conditions with local authorities when we build your programme.
