Rakaposhi Base Camp
An opportunity to experience the huge Rakaposhi massif, one of the Karakoram’s iconic peaks.
Rakaposhi, 7,788 metres high, dominates the lower Hunza and Nagar valleys. From the Karakoram Highway its ice face rises almost six kilometres above the valley floor in one unbroken sweep, one of the greatest mountain walls that can be seen from a road.
There are two ways to experience it. The roadside viewpoint at Ghulmet needs no walking at all. The base camp is a real mountain walk from the village of Minapin, through forest to a high meadow beside the Minapin Glacier, with Rakaposhi and Diran above.
Places to visit
- Rakaposhi View Point, GhulmetA stop on the highway with cafés beside a glacial stream, directly below the mountain.
- MinapinThe quiet village in Nagar where the base camp trail begins.
- HapakunA forest clearing and camping place part of the way up.
- TagaphariThe base camp meadow, above 3,000 metres, on the edge of the Minapin Glacier.
Things to do
- Tea at the Ghulmet viewpoint
- The base camp walk with a local guide, as a long day or with a night in camp
- Photography of Rakaposhi and Diran
Good to know
The base camp walk climbs well over 1,000 metres on a steep path and is only for fit, experienced walkers. For most families, and for elders, we recommend the Ghulmet viewpoint instead.
Best time to visit: Typically May to October. The base camp trail is usually clear of snow from late spring to autumn. The roadside viewpoint can be visited all year.
Getting there: Ghulmet is on the Karakoram Highway between Gilgit and Hunza, about an hour and a half from Gilgit. Minapin is a short drive off the highway nearby.
Route: Islamabad to Gilgit and Hunza
Seasonal notes are typical patterns, not promises. High passes and plains open and close with the snow, and some areas need permits. We confirm current conditions with local authorities when we build your programme.
