Khunjerab National Park, upper Hunza

Khunjerab Pass

A high-altitude pass and the famous Pakistan-China border crossing, subject to current access and border conditions.

The Khunjerab Pass, at 4,693 metres, is where the Karakoram Highway crosses from Pakistan into China, and it is often described as the highest paved border crossing in the world. A gateway stands on the open, windswept saddle, with snow peaks all round.

The road there is half the experience. Beyond Passu and the last town of Sost it climbs through Khunjerab National Park, where ibex, golden marmots and, rarely, Marco Polo sheep may be seen from the car.

The pass is typically reachable from May to November, depending on the weather, and the border area is subject to official access conditions. Foreign nationals must carry their passports.

Places to visit

  • The border gateThe Pakistan-China frontier at the top of the pass.
  • Khunjerab National ParkHigh valleys protected for their wildlife.
  • Passu ConesThe cathedral-like spires above Passu, seen on the drive.
  • SostThe last town in Pakistan, where the customs post stands.

Things to do

  • Stand at the top of the pass
  • Watch for ibex and marmots in the park
  • Photography along the highway
  • Tea in Sost or Passu on the way back

Good to know

At this height the air is thin: walk slowly, keep the stop at the top short, and tell us in advance about any heart or breathing condition. It is very cold and windy even in summer. A park entry fee applies.

Best time to visit: Typically May to November, weather dependent. Snow can close the road at short notice at either end of the season.

Getting there: A full day’s return trip from Hunza: about 170 km and around four hours each way from Karimabad, through Passu and Sost.

Route: Islamabad to Gilgit and Hunza

Seasonal notes are typical patterns, not promises. High passes and plains open and close with the snow, and some areas need permits. We confirm current conditions with local authorities when we build your programme.
