Karimabad, Hunza Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan

Baltit Fort

The former royal residence of Hunza, now a major heritage attraction overlooking Karimabad and the surrounding mountains.

Baltit Fort rises on a ridge above Karimabad, with the Ultar glacier behind it and the whole of central Hunza below. Its foundations are thought to be around 700 years old, and it was rebuilt and added to over the centuries; the timber bays and balconies show the influence of Baltistan and Tibet.

The Mirs of Hunza lived here until 1945. After years of decay the fort was restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and reopened in 1996 as a museum, looked after by a local trust.

Good to know

The climb to the gate is short but steep, and there are steps inside. Entry is ticketed and includes a guide. Yatris who would rather not climb can enjoy the fort from the terraces of Karimabad.

Best time to visit: Year round. Spring blossom and autumn colour are the favourite seasons.

Getting there: In Karimabad, about 100 km and two to three hours from Gilgit on the Karakoram Highway. The last stretch to the fort is a steep cobbled lane, walked in ten to fifteen minutes.

Route: Islamabad to Gilgit and Hunza

Seasonal notes are typical patterns, not promises. High passes and plains open and close with the snow, and some areas need permits. We confirm current conditions with local authorities when we build your programme.
